A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far...er...

Kopii's outfit looks like a dress, don' it?

The anime known as Slayers was run in 1995-97, and had three seasons: The Slayers, The Slayers NEXT, The Slayers TRY. Each season was basically centered around the misadventures of "sorcery genius" Lina Inverse and her motley crew of swordswingers, magic usuers, and just plain weirdos.

The first season introduces us to the 'heroine' and main character of the story, Lina. We come in just in time to see her 'punishing' a gang of unruly bandits and taking their treasure and giving it to a rightful owner: herself. Thus, you already have a first impression on Lina.
As the story goes along, Lina is accompanied by a not-too-bright mercenary swordsman named Gourry Gabriev, who promises to escort her safely to Atlas City. Soon enough, they run into the exceptionally powerful chimera named Zelgadiss, who tries to steal a certain artifact from Lina's custody. But the duo soon learn that Zelgadiss isn't the real enemy; in fact, it's his great-grandfather(/grandfather somehow or another...) Rezo who is after the Philosopher's Stone to cure his blindness.
Lina and company soon discover that in order for Rezo to see, he had made a pact with the Mazoku (monster race). He would gain sight if he resurrected the dark lord Shabranigdo...
So he does.
It's up to Lina, Gourry, and Zelgadiss to stop the evil beast from conquering the world. All they have to fight with is Lina's black magic, Gourry's hikari no ken (sword of light), and Zelgadiss's shamanist powers. Can they do it?
Later on (well, that kinda answers the question of if they did it or not ^^*), Zel leaves Lina and Gourry to their own wanderings, where they run into a hero-crazy princess named Ameria(or Amelia in English) who follows Lina around so she can learn the infamous Dragu/Dragon Slave (picture her doing that like Gourry did..^^*). They are hunted down by a seemingly emotionless sorcerer named Vrumugan(spelling varies) and a very VERY persistant swordsman named Zangulus(who, as far as my knowledge goes, has never mentioned a last name). Lina & co. decide to find the root of the problem and end up meeting a young lady named Eris(or Ellis) who has created an almost-exact copy of Rezo called Kopii Rezo (kopii meaning copy). With the help of Sairaag shrine maiden (and 'Dear' Gourry fangirl number one) Sylphiel and a returned Zelgadiss, after a humungous battle, Kopii, Eris, the many many Vrummies, and Zangulus are defeated. Thus ends season one.

Season two- Slayers NEXT -is a bit more detailed in various categories. Lina and Gourry get new armor, the attacks get spiffier, and the villains become more...well, villainy.
The season begins with Lina decimating the city of Xoana, and near-immeadiately following that, the Princess Martina (insert intensely long and useless last name here) chases after the gang for revenge. Shortly after, the gang stumbles across the mysterious Xelloss (Hmm...why does that name ring a bell?).
Soon enough, the Demon Dragon King Gaav goes after them, and, trying to find a spell to defeat him (i.e. the Claire Bible), are lead on wild goose chases by Xelloss. And in this process, manage to get Ameria and Lina to sing, dress the males in drag, dress Zelgadiss as a bunny, get Xelloss to cook, and have Lina play Brass Rackets against Martina.
The gang then finds the actual Claire Bible, at which time Gaav is confronting them. Lina discovers the secret behind her coined attack, the Giga Slave as well. But because of what she learned, she is reluctant to use it, or it could go out of control and envelop the world in chaos.
Lina confronts Gaav with her Laguna Blade (aka Ragna Blade) and thinks she destroyed him, only to have him leap out again. But just at that time, a little boy that followed along with Martina comes up and destroys him with the quick snap of his fingers. They soon discover that this little kid is actually Hellmaster Phibrizzo. Once this is noted, Phibby kidnaps Gourry and tells Lina to go to Sairaag.
On the way to the place where Sairaag once was, the gang meets up with Zangulus and Sylphiel again. Then after that, they discover that Phibby had completely resotred the destroyed city, filling it with puppet-shells of the dead civilians. The group splits up, and Lina, Sylphiel, and Zangulus enter the temple of Phibrizzo in the center of the city. They soon come into confrontation with Phibby himself.
Phibrizzo then shows off his best powers: little yellow marbles. But not just any marbles! One by one he broke them, and one by one Ameria, Sylphiel, Zelgadiss, Zangulus, and Martina fell, leaving Lina to herself. Phibby tried to convince her to cast the Giga Slave in order for her to lose control of it, but she stood unwavered.
So, in order to get her to do what he wished, Phibby threatened to kill Gourry. This threw Lina a bit over the edge, and she cast the Giga Slave. However, it engulfed her and the Lord of Nightmares (LON) possessed her body. LON destroyed Phibby, restored Lina's gang, and got rid of all the little copies of the Sairaag people. And after that, LON begin to rise into the heavens(or something to that extent). Gourry chased after her, demanding she bring Lina back. He followed her all the way into this abyss-like place, finally getting Lina back. They share their first kiss, and are brought back to earth, completely forgotten all that had happened there.
Then, ending the season, Martina marries Zangulus (and during which we catch a glimpse of, can it be?, Vrummy without the ruby in his head), Xelloss departs for another day, and Lina, Gourry, Zelgadiss, and Ameria, run off for more food and adventure.
